Most people think too highly of themselves (as sinful fallen humans) and have too low a view of God and His holiness and justice. Hence you have the vast majority of people believing that they can somehow earn their way to heaven. You also have other people who deny the doctrine of election from Romans 8 and 9 and say that it would be unfair and unjust of God to choose to only save some of humanity and not save the rest. You have these same people who think that the Creator of the universe, who is immutable, somehow bases His will on the choice of the creature and that He “looks down through the corridors of time and chooses those whom he sees would choose Him.” That is not what Paul means when he uses the word προέγνω, which is typically translated forknew in English translations.
